Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
